Breast Cancer & Me

I often tell people that I was blessed with my second breast cancer diagnosis in 2013. It may sound strange to use the word "blessed" in this context, but it's true. My biopsy was scheduled at Brigham and Women’s Hospital the day after the tragic Boston Marathon bombing. That experience really made me stop and think about perception and how every moment of every day is different for all of us.
As I prepared to undergo another surgery to determine if the cancer had returned, I couldn't help but feel the energy in the pre-operative surgical suite. It was a mix of fear, hope, and determination. I knew the impact that breast cancer could have on my life and the lives of those around me, but I also felt such overwhelming emotions for the innocence of those who fell victim to such a tragic event.
That day, I realized that despite the challenges we face, there is always a glimpse of hope and a chance for a new beginning. It was a moment of clarity that has stayed with me ever since. I may have been faced with a difficult diagnosis, but I also found a new appreciation for the preciousness of life and the power of the human spirit. Sometimes I have to be reminded of the preciousness of living.
As I sit here reflecting on my recent journey of undergoing a Lumbar Artery Perforator Flap reconstruction surgery with bilateral Explant of breast implants on June 7th, I am overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude for the simplicity of life. Facing complications during this process has truly been a reminder of the fragility and beauty of our existence. These gentle reminders help us to quite the ego, softening the survival mode and embracing the gift of life.
Breast cancer has been a catalyst for profound self-reflection, leading me to confront my own toxic behaviors and the need for change. Through this experience, I have come to understand that true healing and transformation must begin from within. It is a journey of patience, kindness, and self-love.
I have learned firsthand that everything we need to thrive and flourish is already within us. The ability to love ourselves unconditionally is the foundation upon which all other forms of love are built. It may sound cliché, but I have come to realize that without self-love, loving another person authentically and wholeheartedly is an impossible task. Trust me I have tried more times than I wish to remember.
So, as I navigate through this challenging chapter of my life, I hold onto the lessons learned and the growth that has come from them. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue a deeper sense of self-awareness and compassion. May this journey serve as a reminder for us all to nurture the love and kindness within ourselves, for it is from this place that true healing and connection can thrive.
Love Always,
